I have been doing more reading online these days then I care too. But reading anything is good for me I guess. I have never been a big reader. The problem is that I don’t like staring at the screen to read but I have ‘rules’ about reading a book. I like the idea of words and books, more then I actually enjoy reading them. I love going to the book store and looking at the books. I love the smell of the paper and the ink. I like the way things are so neatly displayed and organized. I imagine what it would be like to read them and to have a big collection of books. But I know I wont read that many. E can read a book a day. I always say to her, “You didn’t savor it.” I guess when you are looking for this romantic happening when you read, it makes it harder to enjoy just reading.
Picking a book is another thing. Lets pretend that I already know what I want to pick up, which is another story altogether. I have a very limited list of writers that I like. Mostly because I am told they are good writers so I try them out, and what can I say my friends have good taste. Anyway, there I am looking at the books. Look at all these pretty books…where was I? For me to pick a book it has to be the right shape, the right weight, have the right texture when I hold it, I smell it and then picture what it would be like carrying this book around with me. I know, right?!
And then, when the mood is right, the time is right and I am ready to savor my book, I have to gather my supplies. Pen, notebook and highlighter. I have never been a wordsmith but like I said, I like the way words look and how they roll together. So inevitably I find that a few pages or so into the book I start thinking “that is a neat line” or looking for inspiration for my own creativity. So don’t leand me your books unless you want to get the back years later, and with highlighter all over them. Just ask the Doctor.
